The installation invites participants to sit in a single chair, put on headphones, and encounter hidden stories from Christian history—voices whose faith helped shape movements for justice, liberation, and hope.
Narrated by historian Dr. Jemar Tisby, the experience brings to life overlooked figures such as Anna Murray Douglass, Prathia Hall, and the ministers of the Savannah Colloquy. Through sound, story, and imagination, participants are invited to listen deeply and reflect on how faith has inspired courageous acts of resistance and freedom.
Rather than presenting history as something to observe from a distance, God’s Secret Chair asks people to experience it. Sitting still becomes an act of attention. Listening becomes a form of remembrance.
The installation explores how art, faith, and memory intersect—reminding us that some of the most transformative movements in history began with voices that were nearly lost.
This project was developed as part of the Storytellers Collective, a national initiative from Christians for Social Action, the project amplifies stories that expand the Church’s imagination for justice, courage, and compassion.
