The Thing About Bees: A Love Letter to My Sons is a children’s book I wrote and illustrated as a meditation on courage, curiosity, and growing up. Inspired by conversations with my own boys, the story explores how fear and wonder often live side by side, and how learning to understand the things that scare us can become an act of bravery.
The book follows a small child encountering the buzzing mystery of bees, transforming that moment of fear into a lesson about empathy, patience, and attention to the natural world. Through loose brushwork, open space, and quiet moments between parent and child, the illustrations aim to hold the emotional tenderness of early childhood.
At its heart, the book is both a story and a message to my sons: that the world becomes less frightening when we approach it with curiosity, love, and a willingness to look closer.
